So I was having this awful crisis where I didn't know what to do with my life (much less my art) and I didn't know what to work on. I couldn't narrow anything down, realism? abstract? figures? animals? landscapes? lines? blending? blah blah, everything sounded fun, how could I possibly narrow it down? You may have followed it on my field studies blog which has received all the attention this semester.
We were listening to Brian Kershisnik giving a lecture and he said, "If you want to be a great painter, hurry up and make your first 500 bad paintings". And I thought, "That's it!"

So my project is going to be called "500 Bad Paintings". Before I decided to do this, I was being too careful with my paintings, everything was extremely calculated and painting stopped being fun because I was afraid of making bad art. So I decided to embrace it and to be completely ok with making bad art.
<---Read this thing. So yeah, 500 paintings is a lot of paintings. It is a volume of work and lots of it is going to be bad. But in there will be some good stuff, and I can't find that good stuff without making a lot of the bad stuff. Right? So I am going to share that process with people. This is a different idea than doing a clean perfected exhibition of 15 large complete finished culminating pieces, yes? Yes it is, they will be exhibited without hierarchy and I will be sharing my journey.Melissa Noonchester Swanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05694642748741784218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1998484365195022070.post-72102831342293916282011-12-13T12:23:00.000-08:002011-12-13T12:23:04.691-08:00What I am working on now...500 Bad Paintings. Daniele gave me a bunch of old canvases. Underneath was a green and yellow stenciled pattern that she spray painted and I painted this on top of it.
She purchased some websites and over the next few months, we each have one week to upload a piece responding to the artist before us. The connecting medium for this project is the internet. The primary means of communicating, showing, presenting the piece etc. must be digital. In essence, these are installations that site specific to a computer screen. I think this is a fascinating idea and it will be interesting to see each artist respond to it and to each other.

Daniele started it and can be viewed here. I am the next artist, I am excited to start working on my piece.

Ok but speaking of the internet, I am jealous of Daniele's clean, nice, new blog. Go look at it. Click on her name. I have only had my blog look the way it does for a couple months now. But hers looks so darn proFESSional! It means that she is a real artist now. IIIII want to be a real artist too! Everyone around me is getting pretty fresh blogs and websites for their arts and I want one too. It is kind of like when you buy an awesome new dress and you go to school and someone else got an awesome new dress and you are like

wait...

how is that girls dress way better than mine...

Man... well at least I didn't spend any money like if this were actually about dresses. But I was hoping on holding out a little bit so I could think of a better option. I felt like it would be kind of a sell out because I only really want one because everyone who IS anyone has one. I mean, there has to be something better than a fresh, white website for your art right? ...like...a GOLD one! Or like one made of gummy bears? Yeah? Or like one with wings? Maybe if my website was a giant kite with real cake and with a birthday present attached to it, it would be better than a clean white one!

Ok melissa

Get. off. the. internet.

It has some obvious visual links to some installations I did for the same class. The title "Being birthed" came after I had done the video and watched myself being ejected from the protective cocoon. There is a duality that comes from being wrapped up- I feel both stifled and safe. Once I am ejected, I feel liberated and vulnerable. I like that there are 2 complimentary emotions in the before state (being wrapped up), and 2 emotions in the after state (being ejected), which makes 4. It is a large painting- 5x4 feet.
I am interested in the role that deities have played in cultures across the world. People regard their god/gods as the culmination or achievement of perfection according to the values and morals of their community. I am most familiar with Christianity and fascinated with Renaissance and Byzantine art.
I chose a very iconic looking depiction of Jesus because I wanted Him to be universally recognized. I hope that we recognize Christ because we will have seen Him in each other as we strive to become Christ-like people.
Perhaps my goal is lofty but I hope to meet that goal as I become a better artist.

detail

Title: I hope you like this 5x4' oil on panelMelissa Noonchester Swanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05694642748741784218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1998484365195022070.post-55496366728592041862011-03-14T18:56:00.000-07:002011-07-05T18:11:45.881-07:00Painting from lifeThere are actually 2 paintings in here but you can only see one. That is because I painted her realistically once, except that it sucked and she looked like a man. So I sanded it down and did it again. These are 2 and 3, I am continuing having them make weird faces. I like the painting of Heather (#3) more than the one of Brooklynn (#2)because I somehow made Brooklynn look cartoon-ish and her neck disappears with her hair. But I do not feel like re-painting it. These were inspired by my litho prints. I had a few things different in mind but it kept raining when I wanted to do it and so I just turned in what I had. But I am really obsessed with this idea so I will probably do much more with it in the future. This one is called "Invisibility Cloak".

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzofx6zLcHbDtvYOeGXJyCuzlaCPgRz_lHsdWOEDtTipsi5vU9t-WyZIyaiw2-rp3HQVKtWI9aJPe1vSJaiepLqgnun6S-9d9poxVJGLbVzhME94YJEWtrPHDIPM4iDFw-IYDfx28F-IGF/s400/invisibility+cloak_2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583799044498194578" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFD1HJxZrL-FHxgLGhP3naMXoCmU62o8aPxnSPODGdYQCwG4ePwnOWkNhkiYyQXuDAlPsRLnUdgD4Azl1U8tH7JP1vIVfueZ3VzsBPkj8DOTh6PhyhC4wLUHlb2D7EYKgDKX8K-KHm8srU/s400/invisibility+cloak_3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583800372203953986" />

This one is called "Ima be" and a Navajo man came up while we were doing this and was really freaked out and didn't understand what it was for. It's all transparent layers of green, blue, pink, and yellow with a palette knife. It looks even crazier in real life, like a billion shards of stained glass suspended in one thick layer (you should click on it and zoom in). I am excited to try more, but I am glad I painted it on a bed sheet so I could save the panel because honestly, it's an ugly painting. Ok, bye

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 398px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNuiNhFlTiW1cB0nyok0ys2iURRnhxnZMpL-HbveZ5x3Q2qsrOgHu23pWLdIAPiyXiq0WAuIg9vShT_RqhN0Dx37_3IysFvjJghU2Gj9N1Op2Tkf8Ud0fT7BEVCPx2k1i_TYqSttkosAxM/s400/IMG_5690.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583791395380620402" />Melissa Noonchester Swanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05694642748741784218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1998484365195022070.post-85136589982810680502011-03-06T21:59:00.000-08:002011-07-05T18:11:45.884-07:00Le human headMy first real attempt at painting a human being and something weird happened.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 396px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1IS248Oza_xeftfz7BJSj2b5hh-ZfUjhMBYX9Sp4fWwonzEnrgRygxnS-CGYI7a6OaDQEJVE8vxm21FeBGTPQVphgObu0f8k72DUKRj4TfxpI6SDgPhTGAJ1T-y5US_2xxfTwWQqG9XZO/s400/daniele.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584117677554669074" />
I am a person seriesMelissa Noonchester Swanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05694642748741784218noreply@blogger.com
